Frequently Asked Questions about the QTest Photmeter Kit
Can anyone use the QTest Photometer?
Yes! The photometer is designed to be user-friendly, even for those without a scientific background.
If you follow the User Manual, the Step-by-Step Guide for beginners, and read through this FAQ, you’ll be able to use it with ease.
Every test you perform is a scientific experiment. The more you test and observe, the more confident you’ll become in reading your results and understanding what’s happening in your sample.
That’s what we call learning by doing — turning testing into scientific understanding, one test at a time.

What is the QTest Photometer Kit?
The QTest Photometer Kit is a small analytical device that measures how much of a specific substance (like MDMA, LSD, or psilocybin and many more to come) is in your sample.
How long does it take to get results?
The photometer provides results in just minutes after testing.
What exactly does the QTest Photometer measure?
It measures the concentration of an active compound in your sample—like psilocybin, MDMA, or LSD—based on colorimetric reactions. Unlike traditional tests that only show presence (yes/no), this device tells you how much is present.
Is the device portable? Can I use it anywhere?
Yes! Can be easily powered via USB — simply connect it to any computer, tablet, or power bankand is designed for use at home, at harm reduction booths, or even at festivals. It’s compact, durable, and travel-friendly.
Do I need to do any calculations myself?
No calculations are needed. The QTest Photometer automatically interprets the colorimetric reaction and displays the concentration of the active substance in your sample—no math, no charts, and no software required.
What is a “blank,” and do I need to perform one?
A blank defines the zero point of the photometer — it tells the device what the natural color of the reagents looks like, so that background color doesn’t count as part of your sample.
The QTest Photometer is already pre-calibrated for each substance type, so you can use it immediately without doing a blank.
However, for best accuracy, performing a blank is the scientifically correct approach — especially if your extraction solution looks slightly discolored (for example, in Psilocybin QTests).
It helps the photometer adapt to small color shifts that can occur during storage or transport.
One QTest provides enough solution for 4–5 blanks, which can be stored in the fridge (2–8 °C) for up to one month.
⚠️ Never return used blank solution to the original bottle.
💡 Tip: For regular use, choose Bulk Kits — they include extra reagent specifically for blanks.

Can I test multiple samples with the same QTest reagents?
Yes, you can. Just make sure to use a clean cuvette for each sample and follow the same steps: blanking if needed, inserting the sample, and recording the result. This way, you can run multiple tests in a row without restarting the device.
Can I test both MDMA and LSD with the same photometer?
Yes! The photometer works with MDMA, LSD and Psilocybin QTes. However, each test requires its own specific detection solution and blank, so: test one substance at a time, perform the blank for each substance, and do not mix detection solutions or blanks across different QTests. We recommend finishing all measurements for one substance before starting with the next.
Is the QTest Photometer Kit open source?
Yes! The QTest Photometer is open source, which means you can download the software and modify it to suit your needs. If you’re tech-savvy, you can reprogram it, connect it to other tools, or even integrate it into your own systems.
How is the QTest Photometer Kit different from traditional color-based (qualitative) tests?
Unlike qualitative kits that rely on visual color scales, the QTest Photometer gives you precise, numerical concentration values – no guessing involved.
Is the QTest Photometer Kit more eco-friendly?
Yes! The photometer reduces single-use plastic and paper waste. When used with bulk reagent kits, it minimizes packaging and testing materials.
How does the cost per test compare to standard QTest kits?
When using bulk reagent kits like Psilocybin Bulk Kit, the cost per test is reduced by up to 50%, making the Photometer a more economical choice over time.
Can I use the same reagents from the QTest kits with the Photometer?
Yes – the QTest Photometer is fully compatible with our QTest reagents, making it easy to upgrade without switching products.
